LUMSThe Annual LUMS Olympiad '10 concluded on the 25th of March, 2010 at the Lahore University of Management Sciences, in which 1000 participants gathered from all corners of Pakistan to participate in over 28 events that ranged from music and art to sports and debate. The 4 day event, which started on the 21st of March, showcased the immense talent that the youth of Pakistan possessed in all fields, whether it was debating or art. Students from all leading schools and universities participated with great enthusiasm, despite the growing security concerns in the country; this signified the resolve of the youth not to give in to the designs of the terrorist elements.
Leading celebrities and successful personalities from all walks of life turned up at the event to impart their pearls of knowledge and wisdom to the participants. Celebrities such as Amaar Belal and Bilal Lashari conducted workshops over the four day event to encourage the young students to pursue their dreams if they believe in them. After a hard day's work, the participants were treated to a wide spectrum of social events, which included a fashion show, a carnival and a formal dinner. The highlight of the Olympiad was the Sound of Freedom, the concert that took place on Independence Day. The main act was the popular rock act, EP, who left no stone unturned in making the crowd go wild. The day ended with the crowd singing Dil Dil Pakistan, which could sum up the sentiment that was felt through out the conference. Even in these harsh times, it is the youth, the students, who are the beacon of hope and optimism that this nation yearns for. The LUMS Olympiad '10 was a message to the world that no matter what happens, we shall stand united, even in the face of adversity.
Lums Psi Fi'10
On March 25th this year, LUMS hosted Pakistan's first ever Science Olympiad – Lums Psi Fi'10. An event that surely dazzled the contestants with an explosion of thrill, excitement and scientific adventurism, Lums Psi Fi'10 featured over 800 contestants from all over Pakistan competing in 14 ingeniously designed competitions which tested their brains and nerves to the limit.
Lums Psi Fi'10 had it all - Some of the most popular events included RoboWars, Pirates of the Duck Pond, Diagnosis Dilemma, Math Gauge, Lagan, Junkyard Wars, Earthophilia, Aerobatics, Race to Infinity, Gear Up, Tour de Mind, P.A.T.H.S and Coding Conquerors. And there was a lot more then this! A series of workshops; in field of physics, were conducted by leading and inspirational scientist of Pakistan – Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy, to help contestants promote their project, a workshop by Google was organized which was conducted my Country Head of Google, Mr. Badar Khushnood. Moreover, UNDP stepped in and held a presentation on scarcity of water resources along with its micro level solutions.
Furthermore, Lums Psi Fi'10 was equipped with numerous social events, including smashing concert of E.P, sports night, a mega-carnival with all sorts of RC planes flying over and open air gaming competition screened on LED screen, along with fun-filled stalls and activities going on. With all of this packed into 4 days of pure magic, Lums Psi Fi'10 is indeed ranked as the most significant academic event of this decade. (by Anushe Ali)
